Abstract
Background: The proportion of the elderly population has rapidly increased in Korea. Many elderly patients with chronic disease have been managed in geriatric hospitals, however, there has been few data on the patient¡¯s clinical information admitted to geriatric hospital. We investigated clinical features of patients admitted to a geriatric hospital and registered in the Keyo Geriatric Registry (KGR).

Methods: All patients admitted to Keyo geriatric hospital between Feb 2004 and Jun 2006 were included. We analyzed demographic features, clinical diagnosis, admission and discharge status and in-hospital complications and death until Dec 2007.

Results: Six hundreds cases were registered on KGR. Among these cases, 60.5% had hypertension, 30.8% diabetes and 14.0% congestive heart failure. Patients of dementia and stroke group were most common and 37.3% and 30.2%, respectively. Mean duration of admission was 6.5 month. Incidence of medical complication was 44% and pneumonia (31.5%) was the most common and followed by urinary tract infection (15.3%), gastrointestinal bleeding (9.0%) and sepsis (7.0%). Forty four percent of the cases discharged to their home and 16% to the general hospital. The cumulative discharge rates during 3, 6 and 12, months were 61.7%, 70.8% and 82.0%, respectively. The cumulative death rate during 3, 6 and 12 months were 15.5%, 20.1% and 34.7%, respectively.

Conclusion: The KGR provide useful epidemiologic data and clinical characteristics of patients admitted to the geriatric hospital. Further studies have to be continued in the multi-center geriatric hospitals.
